Springfield Police Department Introduces New Hiring Incentive, Student Loan Reimbursement to Attract Officers

In an attempt to attract and retain more officers, the Springfield Police Department could soon offer a hiring bonus, and the opportunity for student loan reimbursement.

In a press release from the department, they are recommending a measure to the city council for new recruits to get a $5,000 bonus when they complete the training academy. Lateral officers, those who are already officers at another location coming to Springfield, would receive $10,000.

SPD also plans to offer student loan reimbursement for officers. Those who qualify would be awarded $2,500 per year for five years, not exceeding the limit of $12,500.

The measure now awaits a final review by the Springfield City Council, and could ultimately be approved sometime in May.
