State Representative Alex Riley (R-Springfield) says he is running to serve as the next speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives.

Riley, who currently serves as House Majority Flood Leader, the second most influential leadership position in the chamber, represents the 134th District in Greene County.

Riley was the first Majority Leader elected from Springfield in 100 years and ultimately won without opposition.

Riley says as Majority Floor Leader, he set out to empower the members of the House to speak and advocate for their constituents, and adds he successfully did so during the 2025 regular session with numerous House members delivering high profile bills to the Governor’s desk.

Representative Riley says he would continue that mission as Speaker. “Our Republican majority is comprised of duly elected members from all around the state that are actively representing their constituents,” Riley said. “Short term limits have reduced institutional knowledge, allowing special interest groups and unelected bureaucrats to dominate in Jefferson City.”

Riley is vying to become only the second Speaker of the House from Springfield in the state’s history.

Elijah Haahr served as House Speaker from 2019 to 2021.
