A woman is dead, and a man is in custody in connection with a fatal hit-and-run near Joplin.

Investigators say 60-year-old Sheldonna Wood was walking along Douglas Fir Road Friday night, July 5, which is south of Joplin near I-44.

While she was walking, she was hit by a pickup truck being driven by 35-year-old Richard Taylor, who was driving west when his car went off the roadway and allegedly hit Wood.

Taylor fled the scene before paramedics arrived at the scene. Wood was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway Patrol troopers were later able to locate Taylor, and place him under arrest at a home in Carterville, Missouri.

He is being held without bond on multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a fatality, and DWI resulting in the death of another person.
